Double Dart Cookie
DoubleClick DART Cookie
What does the DoubleClick cookie do on my machine?
If you find a DoubleClick cookie in your Cookies folder, chances are it’s a DART cookie. The DoubleClick DART cookie serves the purpose of helping marketers assess the effectiveness of their Internet advertising campaigns and paid search listings. A multitude of marketers and websites utilize DoubleClick’s DART technology to display and serve their ads or manage their paid search results. Whenever an advertisement is shown or a paid listing is clicked, DoubleClick’s DART products establish or identify a unique, persistent cookie. The data provided by the DART cookie to marketers includes metrics such as the number of unique users who viewed their ads, how many users interacted with their Internet advertisements or paid listings, and which specific ads or listings were engaged with.
Why does the cookie reappear after I delete it?
Upon visiting any site or search engine utilizing DoubleClick’s DART technology, our servers will check if a DART cookie is present on your device. In the absence of a DART cookie, the servers will attempt to set one in reaction to your browser’s “request” to access that webpage. If you prefer not to have a DART cookie with a unique identifier, you can simply acquire a DoubleClick DART “opt-out” cookie. Alternatively, you might consider modifying your Internet browser’s settings regarding cookies. This will be explained in the following question.
How can I modify my cookie settings to accept or reject cookies?
To remove cookies that you may have accepted previously and to restrict or deny cookies in the future, please adhere to one of the following methods:
IMPORTANT: IF YOU DELETE YOUR OPT-OUT COOKIE, YOU WILL NEED TO REINSTALL THE OPT-OUT. IF YOUR BROWSER BLOCKS ALL OR THIRD-PARTY COOKIES, THEN YOU WILL PREVENT THE SETTING OF OPT-OUT COOKIES.
* For Internet Explorer 6.0 users, navigate to the Tools menu, then to Internet Options, followed by the Privacy tab. This version of Internet Explorer introduced P3P to differentiate among various cookie types. P3P utilizes standardized privacy statements from the cookie issuer to manage your cookie acceptance. Under the “Privacy” tab, click the “Advanced” button. Choose “Override automatic cookie handling” and decide whether you wish to accept, block, or be prompted for “First-party” and “Third-party Cookies.” To block all cookies from DoubleClick’s doubleclick.net domain, go to the “Web Sites” section under the “Privacy” tab, click the “Edit” button, enter “doubleclick.net” into the “Address of Web site” field, select “Block,” press OK (the menu will disappear), click OK once more to return to your browser.
* If you use Netscape 6.0+, click on “Edit” in the menu bar, select “Preferences,” then “Advanced,” and locate the “Cookies” section. Check the box that says, “Warn me before accepting a cookie” or select “Disable cookies.” Click “OK.” Next, click on your “Start” button, select “Find,” click on “Files and Folders,” enter “cookies.txt” in the search box, and click “Find Now.” Once the search results load, drag all listed files into the “Recycle Bin.” Finally, shut down and restart Netscape. Depending on your prior selection, you will either receive prompts for new cookie configurations or none will be set or received. For those using Mozilla or Safari, please consult their respective websites to discover how to disable cookies within those programs.
